Your neighborhood is becoming a Fire Adapted Community!

What is a Fire Adapted Community?

A Fire Adapted Community is a community that is coming together to work on their wildfire resilience. In partnership with the Tahoe Resource Conservation District and your local fire district, your neighborhood will work on defensible space initiatives, home hardening improvements, and organizing an annual workday.

Some FACs may pursue Firewise recognition status, a national program that recognizes neighborhoods that are coming together to become safer from wildfires. Firewise requirements include creating an action plan with the assistance of Tahoe RCD and fire district staff and conducting a risk assessment to get an understanding of where your neighborhood is at in terms of defensible space and home hardening efforts.

What can you do to get started?

You can start working on your defensible space! Zone 0, or the first 5 feet away from your structure, is the most important zone of defensible space and acts as an ember resistant zone during major wildfires. Clearing all flammable vegetation, like pine needles, woody shrubs, or low-hanging tree limbs, from this area will improve your defensible space. See more information on defensible space here.
